Video Poker is a popular game that usually will be wagered on in casinos around the world, or alternatively at home on your home computer, through a net connection. The game rules are very straightforward and consist of the player trying to get the greatest combination of cards as you can in order to acquire cash. In this respect it's much the same as a regular game of poker, without the involvement with other players. Of course, tactics used in a real-life game of poker, such as tricking, will be useless here.

The game of Video Poker starts when the enthusiast inserts credits (whether it's tokens, credit slips or cash) into the video poker machine and pushes the play button. A five card hand will be electronically 'dealt' on the video screen.

The Video Poker machine also has buttons with 'hold' printed on them, and players will need to now pick which cards to hold and which to throw away. For the cards the enthusiast wishes to retain, the 'hold' buttons need to be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can decide to keep any number of cards they wish, whether it's all or none.

After the player has selected which cards she wishes to retain, the player will then press 'deal', which will mean that any new cards will be dealt if desired. The game is now completed, with the Electronic Poker machine analyzing the hand to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands printed on the payout schedule.

Generally, the lowest winning hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the prize money getting larger for each better hand. A list of common winning hands starts with jacks or better, moving on to 2 pairs, 3 of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It should be known that the payment schedule can range from machine to machine, so that discerning bettors are agile enough to select the most beneficial game each instance.

After the initial round has finished, the player can either decide to stay on and try to to increase their winnings, or they can press the 'collect' button to cash out any cash that they may have won. Further, some versions of the game allow the player an opportunity to increase their profits, in which instance another round is played. There are also differences between specific machines, with some virtual decks having wild cards and other varying aspects to enhance playability.
